Shigatse Peace Airport Overview

Shigatse Peace Airport is the fifth largest civilian airport in Tibet and the fifth highest airport in China. The airport connects Shigatse, the second largest city in Tibet, and Chengdu, the most important and famous city in southwest China. In addition to land travel, visitors can fly to Shigatse in a more convenient way to visit Mount Everest, Tashilhunpo temple and many famous attractions.

Shigatse Peace Airport History

The construction of the Shigatse Peace Airport began in 1968, and after the completion of the final auxiliary project, it began trials in 1973. But the airport has not been open to the public for a long time. To boost air transport in Tibet, China has rebuilt and expanded the Shigatse airport. In 2010, it finally completed test flight. The Shigatse peace airport was officially opened on October 19, 2010. An A319 passenger plane landed slowly at an altitude of 3,782 meters.

The airport features a ​​4,502 square-meter terminal building and has a 5,000 meter (16,404 feet) runway. There are a total of three aprons where aircraft such as the Airbus A319 and Boeing 737 can take off and land.

 

The Shigatse airport is located at an altitude of 3,782 meters, and the aircraft has to fly under very harsh geographical conditions: thin air and variable weather. In addition, the lack of ground navigation facilities has a significant impact on traditional routine flights.

The airport is approximately 43 km from the center of Shigatse City. You can take a taxi or airport shuttle from Shigatse to the airport. The shuttle bus will be parked at the Shandong Building at 9 a.m. The taxi is about an hour's drive from the city center, nearly 100RMB.

 

It takes more than 2 days to drive from Chengdu to Shigatse, with a total mileage of more than 2,300 kilometers. Compared to long-haul driving, Shigatse Peace Airport offers 2.5-hour direct flights to Chengdu. The flight distance from Chengdu to Shigatse is 1,526 kilometers.

Traveling in Shigatse

Shigatse is the second largest city in Tibet, located in the southwestern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, close to the west of Ngari and north of Nagqu County. Shigatse is known as the “National Historical and Cultural City” with a history of more than 600 years, as well as famous attractions such as Mount Everest, Tashilhunpo Monastery, Sakya Monastery, Sangzhu Zongbao, and so on. Shigatse has many snowy mountains, virgin forests, holy lakes and unique Tibetan customs.

 

How to get to Shigatse from Lhasa?

Driving: Lhasa is about 260 km from Shigatse. You have two options. One is to drive to Shigatse via the 318 National Highway. This national road can hardly see any scenery, but it is much faster and more convenient and takes about 5 hours. The second way is longer around 8 hours but there are many attractions worth seeing on the road, like the beautiful Yamdrok Lake, the Karuola Glacier.

Trains: There are four trains running between Lhasa and Shigatse daily, including 2 trains from Lhasa to Shigatse and 2 trains from Shigatse to Lhasa. It takes less than three hours for passengers to travel back and forth to Shigatse. Available in hard seat, soft seat, hard sleeper and soft sleeper. The hard seat is perfect for short trips.

1. Documents required for entry/exit in Tibet

√ Passport: The passport must be a valid passport. Whether you are flying or booking a flight, or checking in at the hotel, you must provide the original passport. Therefore, tourists must pay attention to carry a passport with you.

√ Chinese visa: In addition to visa-free countries within 15 days, visitors from other countries are required to provide a valid visa.

3. When is the best time to fly to Tibet?

In general, the recommended months from April to October are the best time to travel to Tibet. Other months are usually cold and there may be heavy snow, especially in the areas of Everest, Mt. Kailash and Namsto Lake. The flights from April to October will be more frequent than in the past. During the period from December to March, airlines will cut the number of flights, usually once a week or even cancel. But big cities like Chengdu and Xi'an still have flights every day during the off-season. It is recommended to take an early flight to arrive in Lhasa later in the afternoon and have enough time to adjust to the altitude and thin air of Lhasa. Morning flights also reduce the risk of flight delays or cancellations.

 

4. What are the popular gateway cities to fly to Tibet?

At present, Chengdu, Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai, Chongqing, Kunming and Shangri-La are used as gateways to Tibet.

 

5. International flights to China

Kathmandu is the only international city that can fly to Lhasa. The flight distance from Kathmandu to Lhasa is only 375 miles (1.5 hours). From May to October, there are one or two direct flights every day. During the off-season, daily flights between Kathmandu and Lhasa may be reduced or cancelled. From Kathmandu to Lhasa, you will need a group visa, Tibet Travel Permit and a valid passport.

 

6. Besides Shigatse Peace Airport, what city in Tibet can I fly to?

There are five airports in Tibet. In addition to Lhasa Gongga Airport, you can also fly to Lhasa, Nyingchi, Ngari and Qamdo.

Lhasa - More than 20 aircraft fly between Lhasa and Chengdu every day. In addition, Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an and Kunming have more than two flights to Lhasa every day. Lhasa Gongga Airport is the largest and most important airport in Tibet, connecting Lhasa with many cities in China and Kathmandu, Nepal.

√ Nyingchi - Chengdu and Chongqing currently have direct flights to Nyingchi Mainling. There are about four flights to Nyingchi in Chengdu every morning between 6:00 and 09:00, and there are about 3 flights to Nyingchi in Chongqing. If you want to fly directly to Nyingchi, you can only transfer from these two cities.

√ Qamdo - Chongqing and Chengdu have daily flights to Tibet Changdu. But few tourists choose this line because Qamdo is not a popular tourist destination in Tibet.

Ngari - There is has a flight from Urumqi (stop by Kashgar) to Ngari Gunsa Airport Every Friday.

8. Is there discount tickets for children?

Infants under the age of two (based on the date of departure) will purchase a baby ticket at 10% of the adult fare. Children who are 2 years of age or younger and under 12 years of age (based on the date of departure) will be entitled to a seat at 50% of the regular adult fare for the same flight. When purchasing a child ticket, you should provide valid documents such as birth certificate and residence booklet for children and babies. When purchasing a baby or child ticket, the identity information needs to be tied to the adult.

 

9. How to get a paper ticket after purchasing a ticket online?

At present, there is no paper ticket for online ticket purchase. Visitors can exchange their boarding pass if they only need to present the valid documents used to book the ticket at the airport counter. Foreign guests flying to Tibet, in addition to presenting valid documents, should also present the original letter of admission to check-in.
